We have identified that the no.1 driver of category management performance is the alignment of category management process to other related business processes (e.g. new product development, budget setting, market strategy etc.). Overall 41% of organisations agreed their process aligns well with related business processes. 59% of Leaders felt this was a statement they could agree with – compared with 34% within the Follower community.  (Note that 78% of the respondents fell into the ‘Follower’ camp). 

New Year’s Resolution No. 4:  Review your category management process and consider how it can be improved to fit more seamlessly with other embedded business processes.  Remember that great procurement only comes when procurement capability becomes a wider business need, not just a functional procurement need.  The closer your category management process is weaved into other embedded business processes, the more sustainable and embedded your category management activity will become. If this means rebranding (renaming) your process to support that, then do it.
