Welcome to the February edition of FP Viewpoint.

Organisations will always be driving procurement change, whether at a Category, Procurement function, or wider organisation transformation level. The start point of any transformation is understanding and summarising the current situation with objective facts and data. This can be a real challenge but absolutely vital to ensure eyes are opened, and hearts and minds are aligned with you. This enables a realistic vision and roadmap to be created that has broad support.

Understanding where your organisation stands versus others, and where you need to be is a vital step. We have an initial benchmarking tool that examines 10 factors to help get organisations started with a visual map of where you are and where you need to be.A second benchmarking tool using our transformation methodology Build-Learn-Lead-Apply-Deliver supports How to change in more detail.

Benchmark Your Category Management Capability

Future Purchasing can benchmark your Category Management capability using our Catman Adoption Framework™ . This confirms the scale of additional benefit available to your organisation by optimising Category Management. We compare you against “world class” performance across 100 criteria and work with you to prioritise the improvement areas, develop an implementation roadmap and quantify the additional value available. The process takes 3-5 days and we believe this is the most effective way to start unlocking the 49%-111% additional value available from Category Management.

How to Transform Procurement in the NHS

In Future Purchasing we have argued for more than five years that NHS procurement transformation remains one of the most important requirements across the public sector.

We have been meeting with and following the work of Lord Carter closely since our meetings with the Prime Minister, and Senior Policy Advisor at Downing Street which started nearly 2 years ago. Lord Carter has now published his report “Operational Productivity and Performance in English NHS Acute Hospitals: Unwarranted Variations”. This broad report summarises the wide variation in operational performance across NHS Trusts. The opportunity is now to define How this can be done in practice.

Implementing the transformation recommendations identified for Procurement will save the NHS £5bn a year by 2020. Our view is that a multi-wave transformational programme now needs to be properly designed, resourced and implemented and Jon Hughes has highlighted the 10 critical enablers that need to be addressed. The enablers and performance indicators are relevant for all leaders driving procurement transformation.
