Welcome to the May edition of FP Viewpoint.

A request to extend the length of our Downing Street meeting resulted in the session now being moved to June - we will provide a summary of the discussions next month.

Driving procurement transformation in the UK National Health Service (NHS) is the focus of the meeting and in this Viewpoint we are sharing some of the materials that we will be using to support, challenge and build on the approaches currently being adopted across this huge organisation.

With £22bn of highly fragmented supplier spend, most of the challenges faced have parallels with private sector organisations that have a “Follower” profile eg the need for collaborative working, better data, and strong stakeholder support. The 4 page briefing can be read here.

Next month we will share the explicit recommendations that we have developed to accelerate value delivery by adopting some of the practices used in private sector procurement transformations.

We are working with a number of clients who see that applying category management principles and ways of working to their external spend is the best way to deliver significantly improved financial results.

“Why Procurement Transformation is central to the Sustainability and Efficiency of the NHS”

A Blueprint for collaboration between doctors, clinicians, hospital management teams and procurement professionals.

In this briefing paper, we start by modelling the spend at a macro level – showing how the total £108M annual budget is segmented and what the key consolidation points are. Building on the NHS procurement strategy document: Better Procurement, Better Value, Better Care, we emphasise the need for cross-functional working with clinicians and driving change at the hospital level through deep engagement of the management teams.

“Track8 - Buying Better, Together.”

2014 has seen a substantial increase in the number of organisations initiating projects to strengthen their category management performance through the use of better processes and dedicated category management technology.

To meet this demand, we will be launching a new website devoted to Track8, our online category management tool. This will focus on how Track8 can help leading teams meet practical challenges such as improving internal collaboration and creating incisive category strategies. The site will also include a video introduction and the invitation to request a demo. Launch date to be confirmed next month!

“2014 Category Management Survey”

In the results so far we are finding companies with a basic approach to category management achieved 3-4% savings rates in 2013 . Firms with optimised category management achieved double this savings rate . Is this your experience too?

We would value your participation in this year's survey to ensure we have the best data available ensuring the results we will then share with you are the most relevant and complete as possible. When the survey closes next week one lucky participant will be chosen at random to win an Apple iPad Mini .
